Awana Missionaries for Nebraska and Southeast Wyoming

Rick & Fairy Hattan

  • “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but I will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” – Philippians 1:20-21

Salvation: We both grew up in the Aurora, Nebraska area. As children we responded to the gospel: Fairy trusting Christ at age 4 and Rick at age 10. The Lord used the ministry of our local church and Bible camps to mold and guide our lives.

College: After graduating from high school, we attended the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Fairy majored in Church Music and Rick, Christian Education. Upon graduating from Moody, we were married and served as Youth and CE Director at Itasca Evangelical Free Church in Itasca, IL.

Farming to Awana Missionary: Following our work in Itasca, we returned to our home area in Nebraska where Rick was involved in farming and plumbing. While farming, the Lord began giving us a strong desire to serve Him in a full time ministry. The influences of children’s ministries in our lives as well as our involvement in local Awana Clubs, were used of God to lead us to become Awana Missionaries in 1985. We serve the area of Nebraska and Southeast Wyoming. Our home church is the Aurora Evangelical Free Church in Aurora, Nebraska.

Responsibilities: We have been missionaries with Awana since 1985. During that time the area has grown from 75 churches to over 160. Our responsibilities include:

  • Strengthen Awana clubs
  • Train Awana leadership
  • Serve as a resource to clubs
  • Build a team of volunteers to assist clubs

Family: We have four children: Kristin, Josh, Titus and Celeste. Kristin and her husband, Paul, live in the western part of Nebraska. They have four boys and a girl. Josh and his wife Laura live in northwest Wyoming. They have a daughter. Titus is in law school in Lincoln, and Celeste is living in the Omaha area.
